How much data do you actually need?
According to the annual market report of the Belgian regulator BIPT, average mobile data use on the residential market tripled over five years, from 3.9 to 11.9 GB per month in 2025. But bundles grew faster than actual use: in 2025 nearly 8 in 10 residential postpaid customers had more than 10 GB included, up from 6 in 10 two years earlier. If you genuinely use little, you are paying for a trend that isn’t about you.
Calling and texting move the other way. On the residential market, average voice use was 155 minutes per month in 2025, a level that has barely moved in five years. Texting is in free fall: consumers sent 114 messages a month in 2020, against 46 in 2025. Bundles of 400 minutes and 400 texts cover that comfortably.
The simplest way to place yourself: take your last three bills and look at actual usage. It is almost always lower than people assume.
Who is a small plan for?
Mostly on wifi, at home and at work. If you spend most of the day on wifi, you rarely go beyond 2 to 3 GB on mobile. A 20 GB bundle then means paying every month for data you never touch.
A first phone for a teenager. Limited bundle, fixed price, cancellable monthly. What parents mainly want is no surprises on the bill.
A second number or a backup phone. A separate work number, or an old smartphone kept in reserve. Usage there is low by definition and only the monthly price matters.
If you rarely call. If you mostly want to be reachable, a small bundle is enough.
What does low data use cost elsewhere?
